 Wisconsin beats iowa!

The first time since 1966, the Wisconsin Badgers beat the Iowa Hawkeyes, 21-14. The Badgers won six of ten matches.

Wisconsin 21 Iowa 14

125: Charlie Falck decision Collin Cudd 12-9: Cudd got taken down a few times in the first period, but answered back with his own takedowns. The huge difference in this match was a cradle by Falck that put Cudd on his back. In all reality, Cudd was really close to being able to stop that cradle and very possibly turn it into his own takedown and backpoints. I don't think Falck will beat Cudd again.

133: Zach Tanelli decision Mario Galanakis 7-5: Just about everybody in the arena wrote this off as a win for Iowa after Galanakis took down Tanelli and rode him hard. With a 3-0 lead and riding time going into the third period Tanelli had a lot of ground to make up. Which he did with about 1-minute left in the match. Tanelli locked up a cradle for 5, but Galanakis escaped right away. The score, with riding time factored in, was tied 5-5. Tanelli hit a single leg which he converted into a double leg to win the match with about 15 seconds left. Tanelli really kept his composure in the third period, he needed a big move and he found it.

141: Kyle Ruschell decision Alex Tsirtsis 6-4: Kyle Ruschell's upset makes him a legitimate All-American threat at 141. Ruschell has become so solid with his defense that he totally shut down all of Tsirtsis takedown attempts. Ruschell gave up one takedown to a duck under and then a reversal in the second period. Ruschell earned two of his own takedowns off of counters to Tsirtsis shots. During the third period the entire crowd was squirming while watching these two wrestle. The scrambling in this match was outstanding!

149: Tyler Turner decision Alex Grunder 8-2:
Turner wrestled a totally solid match. Grunder never really had a chance to do much to Turner. At the end of the match Turner was working hard for a major decision but Grunder just held on to Turner's ankle and wouldn't let go. Turner was visibly frustrated at the end of the match.

157: Craig Henning decision Ryan Morningstar 2-0:
Morningstar did not back down or play defense in this match. He came out shooting. To those of us who know how Henning wrestles there was never any doubt that he would be able to stop Morningstar's shots. A couple of times Henning was on the verge of scoring in some scrambling situations but the referee called a stalemate too quickly. Craig rode Morningstar for the whole second period, Morningstar was never even close to earning an escape.

165: Mark Perry tech fall Jake Donar 18-2 in 4:56:
Perry went upper body and put Jake on his back twice during the match. Donar isn't too bad himself in those upper body situations, he had to try. The first time Perry went to throw Jake, Jake was actually a step away from putting Perry to his back, but in the end Perry was just too explosive and quick.

174: Eric Luedke decision Mike Felling 5-0:
Felling wrestled a competitive match. Felling is really only a few easily correctable mistakes away from being toe-to-toe with Luedke.

184: Trevor Brandvold decision Phillip Keddy 6-2:
Trevor gave up the first takedown and actually got rode for a fair amount of time during this match. Once he got away Brandvold didn't have too much trouble taking Keddy down. On top Brandvold was close to turning Keddy a couple of times. Brandvold's youth shows once and again, but he has been making huge strides as the season has moved along. With two more months of hard wrestling left Brandvold is going to be a real threat at the NCAAs.

197: Dallas Herbst pinned Rick Loera 0:49:
Wisconsin fans expected to see a pin in this match, and of course it happened. Although it didn't come from the patented Herbst-half. Loera shot in on a double leg and as he was driving into Herbst, Herbst threw him over the top, landing on top of Loera and smothering him. Loera was pinned right away.

285: Matt Fields decision Kyle Massey 6-3:
Massey was very aggressive both in this match and in the Northwestern match. Fields got two takedowns on Massey, and both times it was due to Massey being too aggressive. Now, don't take this as criticism, because in the long run Massey's aggressiveness is going to propel him past heavyweights like Fields who just stand around.

Interesting notes:
During the 133, 141, and 184 lb matches the Badgers gave up early points, but all rallied to come back big.
133- Tanelli went down 3-0 then outscored Galanakis 7-1.
141- Ruschell went down 4-1 then outscored Tsirtsis 5-0
184- Brandvold went down 2-0 then outscored Keddy 6-0
In total, these three outscored their opponents 18-1 after giving up an early lead. These three wrestlers are all first time starters on the Badgers team. Could the atmosphere are Carver Hawkeye caught the young guys by surprise? Nah...

Due to a technical problem there will not be a highlight video of the match. If things get figured out we will let you know! We're working on it.
