 Badgers lose to Northwestern

The Badgers came up one point short against Northwestern. Northwestern won six of the ten matches, the two most important were at 125 and 133. The match started at 125.

125: Precin dec. Cudd, 3-2 (3 OT). Cudd failed to make any adjustments during this match to get his offense going. Precin did a good job at controlling the tie ups with his underhooks.

133: Metzler dec. Tanelli 3-1. Tanelli seemed to get frustrated at the end of the match because he couldn't get anything going. Metzler usually keeps matches closes which puts him in position to win. And that's exactly what happened here. The score was 1-1 with about a minute left, Tanelli got over aggressive and got caught reaching. Metzler finished a single leg with about ten seconds left in the match for the win.

141: Ruschell t.fall Kohlberg (22-6, 3:12). Ruschell looked outstanding on his feet. Every time Ruschell steps onto the mat he appears to have improved his wrestling skills. Ruschell used four or five different techniques to take his opponent down, and scored several sets of back points. He looked outstanding.

149: Turner fall Gould 3:51. Turner knew he needed to get bonus points and got it done. It was nice to see our senior picking it up and earning bonus points when he knew the team needed him to. Turner used a cross wrist ride to turn Gould, and then converted it into a pin.

157: Henning maj dec. Marella 11-1. Despite working for a pin the entire match Henning was unable to find it. Marella bellied out when he got into any kind of danger. Henning seemed to be frustrated with the lack of action but just couldn't get anything else going. However, Henning is so dominant now that even a low paced match results in a victory with a ten point margin. Getting a major was never a question for Henning, he was looking for a pin.

165: Donar dec. Hagel 6-4. Jake did a good job this match of not getting to out of position. A reversal and pack points were the difference in this match. Jake hardly got out of position and was looking for offensive points throughout the match

174: Hayes dec. Maciag 8-4. Maciag couldn't get his offense going in this match, Hayes was the aggressor and the score indicated such.

184: Herbert maj dec. Brandvold 16-5. Brandvold wasn't scared to attempt his shots but whenever he got into a compromising situation he bellied out. Trevor was outsized and out gunned. Herbert was looking for a pin the entire match. As a true freshmen wrestling against the #1 guy in the country Brandvold was a bit gun-shy. Not many of Herberts opponents this year have held him to just a major.

197: Tamillow dec. Herbst 5-0. This was a match that Herbst had a chance to win. Tamillow came out shooting, and although Herbst defended the first few shots he was unable to defend one at the end of the period. Herbst got two chances to be on top of Tamillow and was very near turning him once. But in the end Tamillow just held too good of position to allow Herbst to score any points.

Hwt: Fox dec. Massey 3-2. Massey was the aggressor this entire match but was greatly undersized. Fox scored on a high-c in the second period and that was the difference in the match. At the end of the match Massey was working hard to try and make something happen, and Fox was visibly tired.

A win against Iowa tonight would sure soften the blow of this loss.
