Wisconsin won it's 15th dual meet of the season in as many matches.
The match started at 125 will Collin Cudd facing Mark McKnight. Cudd, losing 10-4, may just have won the dual for the Badgers when he avoided giving up a takedown at the end of the match. Had Cudd given up that takedown Penn St would have received an extra team point due to a major decision. Which was the difference in the match.
133: Zach Tanelli pulled off a big upset when he beat Jake Strayer 12-6, though the score doesn't accurately represent how close the match was. Tanelli needed an escape in the third period to tie the match. Strayer was riding very tough, but late in the match got called for an illegal figure-four and Tanelli was rewarded one point. With seconds left in the match Tanelli was able to escape and then take down Strayer to his back nearly getting the fall.
141: Kyle Ruschell wrestled a very good match against Bryan Heller from Penn St. Heller started the match with a nice double leg, but by the end of the match Heller had all but quit. Ruschell tried to force a few extra takedowns late in the match to earn the major decision but he was unable to do it. Ruschell won 11-5.
149: Tyler Turner started off the match with a very high pace, earning two takedowns right away. But Dan Vallimont never got tired, Vallimont held great position against Turner. Vallimont would tie up Turner's hands, slowing Turner down and keeping him from racking up the score. Turner, like Ruschell, tried to force a late takedown but got taken down himself. The score, 8-6, doesn't reflect how in control Turner was throughout the match.
157: Craig Henning had an undersized Bubba Jenkins from Penn St. Bubba is a true freshmen and a real talent coming out of high school. Henning had little problem scoring on Bubba and earned a tech-fall in the third period.
165: Jake Donar couldn't get much going against Dave Rella from Penn St. Rella had a perfect game plan for Donar. Jake does his best work from collar ties and when the opposing wrestler shoots high-c's. Rella did neither. Rella never tied up with Donar and only took running double leg shots. Rella won the match 6-4.
174: James Yonushunis did not disappoint Penn St. fans, he was expected to earn bonus points for his team and he did just that. Yonushunis beat Mike Felling of the Badgers 13-4. Felling did a good job of keeping the match close until the third period when Yonushunis got a string of takedowns.
184: Trevor Brandvold continues to get better, he won a convincing 10-5 decision over Phil Bomberger. Trevor gave up the first takedown but was never in danger of losing the match. Brandvold rode very well, almost getting nearfall points at several points during the match. Brandvold looked impressive on his feet as well, scoring everytime he shot.
197: Easily the match of the night. 11th ranked Dallas Herbst vs 2nd ranked Phil Davis. Dallas started the match real strong with a takedown and nearfall but quickly gave up a reversal. Davis rode Herbst really tough, locking up several cradles and earning near fall points with one of them. The final score of the match was 11-6.
Heavyweight was an entertaining match with two fast moving, lighter wrestlers. Aaron Anspach was just a little quicker than Kyle Massey. Anspach won the match with his takedown defense and a few of his own sweep singles. Massey had a chance to ride Anspach late in the match but Anspach did not even try to get up.
