 Eagles defeat Titans

The UW-La Crosse wrestling team scored 20 consecutive points on major decisions and went on to win 32-10 over UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (Dec. 6) in Oshkosh.

With the match tied 6-6, UW-La Crosse received its first of five straight major decisions when the Eagles' Jay Milz blanked Paul Gretzinger (Fr. • Pulaski) 10-0 at 149 pounds.

UW-La Crosse followed with a 13-5 victory by Ross Needhame over Dallas Moe (Fr. • Seymour) at 157 pounds, a 9-1 win by Scott Dorn over Kevin Luedtke (Jr. • Two Rivers) at 165 pounds, a 11-2 triumph by Josh Chelf over Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) at 174 pounds and a 14-3 win by Jason Lulloff over Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi) at 184 pounds for a 26-6 advantage.

UW-La Crosse (5-1/2-1) entered the match ranked third in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, while UW-Oshkosh (2-3/1-2 WIAC) was ranked 30th. It is the first time since a 24-18 loss back in the 1998-1999 season that the Titans have scored double-digit points against the Eagles.

The match started with an Eagles victory at 125 pounds when Pat Parrillo defeated Kyle Kleuskens (Fr. • Freedom) 11-7. The Titans received six of its 10 points via a pin at 133 pounds when Dan Akright (Fr. • Sheboygan) stuck the Eagles' Mark Girgis at 2:29. UW-La Crosse knotted the score at 6-6 when Ben Kreuzer narrowly defeated Morgan Sickinger (Jr. • Manitowoc), 4-3 at 141 pounds.

Justin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) was the other winner for UW-Oshkosh was he registered a 10-2 victory over the Eagles' Andy Moore at 197 pounds. With the win, Schmalfeldt improves to 11-3 on the year.

Dan Laurent finished the match for UW-La Crosse with a pin over UW-Oshkosh's Kyle Coleman (Sr. • Poplar) at the 2:07 mark at 285 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh has now lost 15 consecutive times to UW-La Crosse, dating back to the 1989-90 season.
