words from mike deroehn, Titans head coach

The Titans have had three competitions since the last update when we competed against Dubuque and UW at the WWCA Clinic.  On Saturday November 11th we traveled to the Pointer Open and faced some great competition.  There were a number of different schools in attendance ranging from Division I through NJCAA.  In total, we had six place winners in the event, which is a decent showing based on our team's experience level.

Placing Top 6 were
Dan Akright-133-5th
Paul Gretzinger-149-4th
Dallas Moe-157-5th
Eli Felts-165-2nd
Adam Dorner-174-5th
Justin Schmalfeldt-HWT-2nd

On November 15th, we hosted UW-Platteville who came into the dual meet ranked #25 nationally.  It was a back and forth dual that provided a lot of excitement for the home fans.  The Titans prevailed and pulled the upset 26-19.  This was a great early season win and gives the team some confidence to compete against national level competition.  One of the biggest wins came from our super tough freshman Justin Schmalfeldt.  He beat up on Ryan Rozek who came into the dual ranked #5 in the country.  Justin is working his way down to 197 and is routinely giving up 50-75 pounds.  However, he competes like an animal and is making great progress early on.  Here is a link to the dual results.   http://www.titans.uwosh.edu /Wrestling/

Following the big win over Platteville, we headed over to Iowa for the Coe Invite.  Again we faced some great competition including #2 ranked/defending NCAA Champions Wartburg College, #12 Coe College, and #16 Cornell College.  Similar to the Pointer Open, we totaled six place winners.  In contrast we put four into the championship finals.  however it turned out to be bitter sweet as each of the Titans fell in their finals bout.  Earning second place finishes for the Titans were Paul Gretzinger-149, Adam Dorner-174, Pat Detmer-184, and continuing his fine freshman season, Justin Schmalfeldt-HWT.  Earning 5th was Kyle Coleman-197 and in 6th was Derek Koenig-133.

To cap off the big news before a short break for Thanksgiving, the UW-Oshkosh Titans broke into the National Rankings this week at #30.  This is on ly the second time in the history of the program that UW-Oshkosh has been nationally ranked.  This is a great sign that people are taking notice of the progress we're making and we plan to continue climbing until we're at the top.
